My Kitchen

I am passionate about food, healthy wholesome foods made with seasonal, local and organic resources. If I am not teaching my yoga classes or talking to clients, you can find me here online or blending green juices and smoothies in my kitchen, wipping up raw desserts and cooking up my crazy and wild food experiments.  I love to experiment with food and get creative in my kitchen.

My relationship to food

I received my training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I was trained in more than one hundred dietary theories and studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods. My training encouraged me to experiment with different diets and ways of cooking. But even long before my training I was curious about food. In my early twenties I got infected by the Epstein-Barr Virus. I was sick for a long time and it took a huge toll on my immune system. As a result, I developed Irritable Bowel, Candida and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. As my health was failing me, I was confronted by a health care system that was only looking at how to alleviate the symptoms and not working to find out solutions. Not one doctor mentioned the importance of diet in getting my health back, while I clearly had an unhealthy bowel and digestive system. As no doctor could help me out, I began on my own a journey back to heath.

Food sensitivities

I began to explore my relationship to food. I started to notice that how eating different foods affected me in different ways. Some foods made me feel great. Other foods made me feel tense, lethargic and irritated. Over a period of time, I began to crowd out the foods that made me feel like crap and began to eat more of the foods that made me feel in balance, alive and full of energy. It took me around a year to bring my body back into balance. I cut out refined sugar, dairy, gluten, alcohol, processed foods. I lived mainly on a diet of rice and cooked vegatables. Soon I began to feel better than ever.

Since that time, I’ve made huge shifts in my diet. I remain curious about food and still love exploring how food affects me. My food-mood sensitivity varies. If I am in a warmer climate or season, I need to eat and drink differently.  Only you can determine what is the right amount of proteins, carbs and fats for you, which foods are right foor you and which ways of cooking bring you back in balance.

Trust your gut

If I ever learned one thing, is that you need to trust your gut. I am a firm believer that you always already know what’s best for you. Your gut literally tells you which foods are right for you and which foods to watch out for. I learned that a nutrient dense, wholefood diet makes me feel nourished, happy and whole, and that most of the (processed) foods you buy in stores suck all energy out of me. I learned that eating gluten makes me feel grumpy and heavy. I learned that eating lots and lots of (raw) green veggies gives me an abundance of energy but that I need warm stews and soups to make me feel grounded and centered at the same time.

Nourish yourself

I also learned I that nourishing myself in other ways is incredibly important. Food is very important but doesn’t make you feel better if you do something you hate on a daily basis. You need to look at how other areas of your life affect you. Are you still on the right path? Are you living the life you want to live? Are you in a dead-end job or a relationship that is killing your spirit?

Connecting to people at a deeper level, being outside everyday, spending time in nature and exercise are essential for me to feel alive, connected and full of energy. I learned that whenever I follow my heart, despite the risks and without any concern for the status quo, I always end up being exactly where I need to be. Following your heart and doing the things you love, having fun, laughing hard and surrounding yourself with great beings are of the essence of a happy, healthy and passionate life.

My experience taught me to listen to my gut, to trust my instinct, to nourish myself, to live more passionately, to connect to nature and spirit and the healing nature of food and home-cooking. I feel more informed, active and connected in everything I do. I experience a deeper connection to my own being, to life, nature, people and animals.
